The "back" and "forward" buttons have been raised higher on the controller, and flank a new button shaped like the Xbox 360 logo--similar to the Xbox "X," but tilted slightly upward. This button lights up when in play, and in split-screen games, whichever quadrant of the screen you're playing on will also be designated accordingly on the circumference of the button. More importantly, this new button will reportedly give you direct access to your Xbox Live dashboard. No more having to jump through various menus to get to your friends list and all that sort of thing while in-game.

Be Cool

One of the surprises we found when checking the Xbox 360 innards was its cooling solution. To keep things quiet and cool, Microsoft has designed a liquid cooling system that dynamically adjusts the flow of the liquid and the speed of the fans depending on the temperature and power consumption.

This intelligent approach has allowed Microsoft to build smaller console by removing the traditional heatsinks found in most computer and replacing them with a combination of fans and liquid cooling. This combo is more efficient and keeps the processor at a lower temperature than the original Xbox, which is a remarkable achievement considering the higher clock speeds and power consumption that the new Xbox 360 hardware has in comparison with the old console.

Not satisfied with that, Microsoft has also used a high-end technique that allows the system to turn off the cores when they are not being fully utilized. So let’s say you are watching a DVD movie or just listening to music, the system will automatically turn off the two cores that are not being used for the console to consume less power during that time.

Storage

The Xbox 360 has a detachable hard drive unit that can be upgradeable. Initially, the system will ship with a 20 HDD but Microsoft informed us that there will be bigger hard discs in the future.

The DVD-ROM unit is a dual-layer, 12x read capable drive that can read all modern media including DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD. Although not specified in the specs sheet, we also expect the new Xbox to be able to play Windows Media High Definition Video (WMV HD) movies distributed on DVD-ROMs.

Finally, the Xbox 360 has two memory slots to connect memory units that start at 64MB.

The Xbox 360 has support for up to 4 wireless game controllers. (If you want to read more about the way the wireless controllers work, you should check Rob’s article right here). The console also has 3 USB 2.0 ports; two on the front, one on the back, that allow you to connect the wireless controllers to recharge batteries, other peripherals such as digital cameras and MP3 players and the Xbox 360 camera.

Of course, the Xbox 360 has a built-in Ethernet port just like its predecessor.

Audio

Being that the Xbox 360 is kicking off the HD era, it is mandatory for all games to exploit the console’s surround sound capabilities, which we must say are quite impressive. The console has a multi-channel surround sound output that supports 48 KHz, 16-bit for over 256 audio channels. Internally, the console can process 320 independent channels in 32-bit mode.
