How can I disable the BitTorrent client in Opera?
Platform: All desktop versions
Starting with version 9, Opera has a built-in client for BitTorrent, to simplify downloading and sharing of Torrent files.
Some may prefer to use a different third-party BitTorrent client with Opera, while others are on networks where all P2P activity is banned. Fear not, you can still use Opera!
The BitTorrent client in Opera can easily be disabled, and system administrators can apply this policy to all users.
Single user
Disabling Opera's BitTorrent client
To disable Opera's BitTorrent client, simply follow this link:
opera:config#BitTorrent|Enable
Unselect "Enable", click "Save", and BitTorrent is disabled.
Note that it is not necessary to disable Opera's BitTorrent client in order to use a third-party BitTorrent client; simply follow the steps below.
Using a third-party BitTorrent client
If you wish to use a third-party client instead of Opera's BitTorrent client , follow these steps:
Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Downloads
Unselect "Hide file types opened with Opera"
Type "torrent" in the Quick find box
Double-click the line that looks like this:
application/x-bittorrent torrent
From this dialog you can select to either use your system's default BitTorrent client (Open with default application) or define a preferred client (Open with other application).
Note that this will not disable Opera's BitTorrent client, but it will associate Torrent files with your preferred BitTorrent client.
System-wide
For a system-wide policy, simply add the following two lines to the system fixed file:
[BitTorrent]
Enable=0
Write-protect the system fixed file. Opera's BitTorrent client is now disabled, and can not be re-enabled by other means than editing the system fixed file.
For more information on system fixed, and customizing Opera for network deployment with this and other settings, see the System Administrator's Handbook.
